Over the years, GEC has collaborated with several organizations, government departments and academic institutions on initiatives such as ecological restoration and environmental communication. Since its inception in 1992, GEC has formed associations with the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India; Government of Gujarat; Indo-Canada Environment Facility; World Bank and Society for Integrated Coastal Management among others.
An integral aspect of GEC’s work is the restoration and conservation of mangroves wherein GEC has progressively forged partnerships with eminent corporate houses of Gujarat. Industries have been involved in restoration of mangroves as their role in conservation is pertinent. Over 23 industries have been constant partners of GEC like Adani, Bayer, ESSAR, L&T, Indian Rayon to name a few.
National Institute of Oceanography, Goa and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry have been associated with GEC for implementation of project activities. Similarly, GEC has partnered with international non-corporate institutes such as International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems, Japan and Mangrove Society of India to share the experiences in mangrove conservation.
GEC also involves the best of academia in its projects through assignments and internships. Many organizations of repute such as Institute of Rural Management (IRMA), Anand; Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad and Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai have partnered with GEC. Recently, GEC also collaborated with the University of Maryland Centre for Environmental Studies (UMCES), United States, on developing a Coastal Ecosystem Health Report Card- a simple yet effective tool to assess the status and conditions of an ecosystem.
Collaboration with non-governmental organizations such as AKRSP and UNNATI, working on socio-economic issues, has helped GEC to bring together rural communities for village development. GEC has established more than 22 Community Based Organizations for mangrove restoration activities. Through these CBOs, GEC has been able to reach up to 1,826 direct and around 56515 indirect beneficiaries of mangrove restoration.
